The 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons ranger from the player's handbook has taken a lot of flack.
So Wizards of the Coast response is to offer up another ranger option for us to play test.
This ranger is spelless and has more of a primal feel to them much like barbarians.
They are also compared to the paladin.

I've struggled over the beast companion ranger archetype in 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons more than any other aspect of the game.
I feel like players love to play the beast companion style character whether we are talking about the ranger or the druid.
Heck even barbarian benefits from a beast companion class archetype.
We tackle what we see as the biggest gaming challenge with playing the ranger character class from the players handbook.

Finally Wizards of the Coast has released the new ranger for 5E D&D.
We get a new ranger archetype, a complete reworking of the beast companion, and a over haul of the core character class from the players handbook.
The WOTC tabletop rpg game design team really took their time, but have moved in the right direction when it comes to the ranger 5E DnD.
This class is now a serious contender with the other classes and I think both player and Dungeon Master alike are going to be happy
to these rangers going on adventures in their campaign worlds.

Regarding the revised ranger, I mentioned back in 2017 that we have no plans to release an alternative version of a class.
That plan hasn’t changed. There is one ranger: the one in the Player’s Handbook

I fix the ranger by multiclassing 9 levels into Ranger Hunter, 8 levels into Rogue Scout, 1 level into druid, and 2 levels into fighter.
This gives you expertise in Nature and Survival checks, 3 cunning actions, Extra sneak attack damage, both uncanny dodge and evasion
(so you don't have to choose between them), an extra fighting style, and 2 druid cantrips along with 2 druid first level spells.
This to me feels how the Ranger alone should feel, only going straight Ranger would grant you with higher spell slots than this build.
